MINORITY PARTICIPATION PROGRAM (MPP) ADVISORY
COMMITTEE
Function
The MPP Advisory Committee assists the Education and Outreach
staff in its efforts to attract ethnic minority students to careers
in the geosciences and to award scholarships to decrease the financial
needs of Blacks/African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics/Latinos,
who are U.S. citizens with proven scholastic ability and with
the motivation to ensure the likelihood of future success. The
advisory committee makes recommendations about the program to
the Executive Committee and keeps it informed on geoscience minority
matters in general.
Responsibilities
- Establish goals and objectives for attracting and retaining
Blacks/African-Americans, Native Americans, and Hispanics/Latinos,
who are U.S. citizens, into the geosciences.
- Develop a continuing program of raising funds exclusively
for scholarships from industry, professional societies, and
individuals.
- Recommend recipients of AGI minority geoscience scholarships,
which are given to undergraduate and graduate students studying
within the framework of the geoscience discipline or Earth science
education.
- Recommend specific plans that will increase career opportunities
and that will lead to significantly greater participation by
under-represented ethnic minorities in the geosciences. These
plans should include means to make minority geoscience professionals
highly visible to potential minority geoscientists, and to show
that the geoscience disciplines are worthy of their attention
and best efforts.
- Provide advisory counseling services to ethnic minority students,
universities, colleges, employers, and professional societies
on minority matters.
