2.5 A Search for Patterns: Earthquakes and Volcanoes

This investigation will help you to:

  1. Find patterns in the location of earthquakes and volcanoes at a regional and global scale.
  2. Look for relationships between two kinds of events that change the geosphere: earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
  3. Make scientific inferences to predict where earthquakes and volcanoes might occur in the future.

Near Real-Time Current World Earthquakes Data
United States Geological Survey, National Earthquake Information Center

Find data on earthquakes that happen today all over the world.

15 Largest Earthquakes in the US
USGS Earthquake Hazards Program

There are two lists on this page: the top 15 earthquakes in the United States and the top 15 earthquakes in the contiguous United States. The reason for the lists is that eleven of the fifteen happened either in Alaska or Hawaii.

Earthquakes, Volcanoes, and Plate Tectonics
USGS

Map showing earthquakes and volcanoes in relation to plate movements.

Savage Earth, Mountains of Fire
PBS

This web site accompanies another portion of the documentary, Savage Earth, with general information about different types of volcanoes, the location of volcanoes, and different types of volcanic eruptions.

Volcanic Gases
USGS Volcano Hazards Fact Sheet

Discusses why volcanic gases are important to study, how geologists study volcanic gases, and what they have learned.

Location of Volcanoes
NASA Classroom of the Future

Find out more about how and why volcanoes form along plate boundaries or above hot spots. Note the links to other related pages about plate tectonics and heat flow or looking inside the Earth.

The Electronic Map Library
California Geographical Survey

The Electronic Map Library includes a series of atlases created by Dr. William Bowen. These volumes are evolving in response to the changing instructional needs of the Department of Geography at California State University, Northridge.

Volcanic Features of Hawaii and Other Worlds
Lunar and Planetary Institute

Find forty wonderful volcanic slides you can download. Slide topics include Volcanic Structures and Landforms (Slides 32-40), Radar Studies of Lava Flows (Slides 26-31), Rocks and Boulder Fields (Slides 21-25), Eruption Types and Resultant Landforms (Slides 1-20).

Collection of Volcano Movies
Westhampton Beach High School, NY

Find a variety of mpeg, avi, quicktime, and flash movies showing all sorts of volcanic phenomena.
