  • The Earth systems interactions that influence coasts, including waves, tides, sea level changes, geosphere movements, and storm surges. 
  • The nature of the biosphere that inhabits the coast including: on beaches, in estuaries, in salt marshes, and in mangrove swamps. 
  • How people are affected by coastal processes including flooding, shoreline erosion, and sedimentation.
  • How people affect the coast through land developments, waste disposal, changes in coastal biota, and attempts to control coastal processes.
