FOSS for Middle School

Larry Malone
Linda De Lucchi

The Full Opton Science System for Middle School project (FOSS 6–8) is a comprehensive middle school science program that engages students in active exploration of natural phenomena. The program uses multiple methods for engaging students, including experimentation, reading, multimedia interaction, and discourse. The goals of the program are to increase the scientific literacy of all middle school students, to enhance the effectiveness of middle school science teachers, and to reform the way science is integrated into the overall academic experience of middle schoolers. The FOSS 6–8 curriculum is offered in 9 courses, three in each major strand: life science, physical science, and earth and space science. Resources in the curriculum package include, student laboratory materials, teacher guide, student lab notebook, student resources book, and multimedia CD-ROM. The FOSS 6–8 program is distributed commercially by Delta Education.

This project is supported by the National Science Foundation (Grant No. ESI-0352345). Any opinion, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily reflect the views of the National Science Foundation.
