The Center for Curriculum Materials in Science (CCMS) serves a critical national
need to build knowledge and human capacity to develop the next generation
of science curriculum materials, aimed at helping all students achieve science
literacy. The CCMS is a collaboration of Project 2061 of the American Association
for the Advancement of Science, Michigan State University, Northwestern University,
and the University of Michigan. Through research and development projects
carried out within and across the partner institutions, through doctoral and
postdoctoral programs focused on science curriculum materials, through model
courses for pre-service and in-service teacher development, and through an
active communications and outreach program, the Center is helping to build
a national infrastructure for science curriculum materials development, analysis,
selection, and implementation. The following principles guide all aspects
of the Center's work: (1) the centrality of clearly stated science learning
goals, (2) the importance of building pedagogical supports into instructional
materials, (3) the usefulness of student investigations, (4) the value of
incorporating learning technologies into instructional materials, and (5)
the need to serve diverse learners by designing instructional materials that
are accessible to all students. For more information, go to www.ScienceMaterialsCenter.org.
