National Status Report on K-12
Earth Science Education

AGI recently conducted a review of published documents and a telephone survey for the purpose of synthesizing information about the status of K-12 Earth Science Education in all 50 states. We plan to update the survey twice a year using feedback provided by individuals who review the survey and provide corrections to AGI.

CONTENT


The National Status Report seeks to provide information about the following for each state:
  • K-12 School enrollment (2000-2001)
  • 9-12 School Enrollment (projected 2000-2001)
  • State standards adopted: (Year) URL
  • Earth science emphasis in state standards
  • Credits required for high school graduation
  • Required high school science courses 
  • Is Earth science required for high school graduation
  • Is Earth science part of another course required for high school graduation? 
  • If Earth science is taken, does it count toward graduation requirements? (Comments)
  • Description of state testing
  • Is state test required for graduation? (Comments)
  • Is Earth science content currently assessed on a state test? (Comments)
  • Does the state have a high school exit exam? 
  • Teacher high school certification requirements
  • Percentage of teachers whose main assignment is Earth science who are certified in the subject
  • Does your state select or recommend textbooks? 
Percentage of grade nine students enrolled during the 1997-98 school year in: 
  • Earth science 
  • General science 
  • Physical science 
  • Integrated or Coordinated science
Course enrollments as a percentage of students in grades 9-12 during the 1997-98 school year: 
  • Earth science
  • Biology 
  • Chemistry 
  • Physics

REVIEW AND FEEDBACK

If you would like to assist AGI with this effort, please review the report for your state and provide comments to AGI using the procedure below:
  1. Download MS Word version or MS Excel version of the National Status Report (May 2002 Issue) and our Reviewer Feedback Form.  In addition, this report was the basis for a powerpoint presentation given by the AGI Education Director, at the AGI Geoscience  Leadership Forum - Improved Effectiveness Through Increased Cooperation, May 2002.
  2. Note any omissions, inaccuracies, or corrections for your state on the feedback form and on a copy of the report for your state.
