ALERT: Innovation Video Contest: Illustrate the Value of Earth Science

IN A NUTSHELL: The Task Force on the Future of American Innovation is sponsoring a video contest about scientific innovation in America. Please consider creating and submitting a 3-minute video that shows how scientific discoveries resulting from federally funded Earth science research has changed our lives. The winner receives $1000 and a trip to Washington DC to present the video on Capitol Hill. The top 5 videos will also be shown on Capitol Hill. This is a wonderful opportunity for creative and very visual geoscientists to showcase the value of Earth science research for Congress and the American public.

The 3-minute videos must be submitted via the YouTube internet site by September 10, 2007. Below are the contest details taken directly from the Task Force web site.

The Task Force on the Future of American Innovation, comprised of organizations from industry and academia, advocates increased federal support for research in the physical sciences and engineering. Formed in 2004, the Task Force urges strong, sustained increases for research budgets at the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy Office of Science, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Department of Defense.

Contest:
The top five videos selected will be viewed in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 4, 2007, during a 50th anniversary commemoration of the launching of Sputnik by the Soviet Union and the ensuing American investments in research and education. Invitees to this special event will include members of Congress and their staff. The producer of the winning video will win an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. (for two people) from within the United States to attend the Capitol Hill event. This grand prize will include round trip travel expenses, one night hotel accommodations and a scholarship check for $1,000. The four runners-up will each receive a check for $300.

Criteria for Judging Videos:
o Creativity
o How well message is conveyed
o Level of entertainment
o Quality of the video

Video Contest Rules:
o Videos are to be no more than three minutes in length.
o All videos must be received by Monday, Sept. 10, 2007.
o Any submitted video may be used by the Task Force in its activities, including Capitol Hill presentations and posting video on the Internet.
o The contest is limited to contestants residing within the United States.
o Each contestant may submit no more than two videos.
o Please submit your video via the YouTube Internet site at YouTube.com
o Members of the Task Force on the Future of American Innovation will judge the contest.
