MEMORANDUM

October 10, 1997

To: Government Affairs Program Advisory Committee Members and Liaisons
GAP Advisory Committee Meeting Attendees

From: Dave Applegate and Kasey Shewey, AGI Government Affairs Program

Re: Information for October 18th Advisory Committee Meeting

Enclosed you will find a number of documents for your review before our meeting next week, including a preliminary agenda, current committee roster, draft GAP strategic plan, prospectus for the AGI Congressional Science Fellowship, and a draft AAAS statement on database protection for your consideration. We would like your feedback on all these items at the meeting. Minutes from the last meeting were mailed out to committee members in May. They are available on AGI's web site.

The strategic plan is in its second draft and should be considered a work-in-progress with considerable feedback needed from the committee on priority-setting and program direction. After gaining feedback from a number of other policy-oriented geoscientists, a third draft will be made available to the Member Societies for comment before seeking approval from the AGI Executive Committee this coming January.

As reported in the last monthly update, the AGI Foundation has approved support for an AGI Congressional Science Fellowship in 1998. The draft prospectus outlines the program rationale, requirements, and some logistical considerations. The application deadline is February 1, 1997, and advertisements are being placed in Member Society periodicals. Because the advisory committee will have an important role in selecting the fellow, the prospectus will be on the table for discussion.

We will discuss the AAAS statement along with a number of other proposals that have been made to AGI for its participation in policy-related activities. The committee's feedback on the draft statement is being sought to determine whether AGI should sign on to it. Additional information on this issue is available on AGI's web site.

For those who are not able to attend the meeting, I encourage your written input on any of these matters.
