AGI and USGS Sponsor Photography Exhibit

“Stones from the Sky: Landscapes of Geology” the exhibit featuring the stunning aerial photography of Michael Collier, is currently on display in the U.S. Geological Survey Art Hallway. As part of this showing, photographer and author Michael Collier will present an illustrated reading at the USGS Visitors Center on January 16, 2008 at 3:00 PM.

Renowned in the geosciences for his stunning work, Collier has received the American Geological Institute’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Pubic Understanding of Geosciences. In addition, his books have won the National Outdoor Book Award, the National Park Service Director’s Award and the U.S. Geological Survey’s Communications Award.

Directly following Collier’s presentation, a reception will be held until 6:30 PM in the Art Hallway. Visitors will be able to view the impressive photographs and talk to the photographer about his experiences in aerial photography and the geosciences.

“Stones from the Sky” will be on display at the U.S. Geological Survey throughout the month of January.

AGI and AGIF Establish Award for Exemplary K-8 Earth Science Teacher

The American Geological Institute (AGI) and the AGI Foundation are pleased to announce the creation of the Edward C. Roy, Jr. Award for Excellence in Earth Science Teaching. Given annually, this award recognizes one classroom teacher from kindergarten to eighth grade for his or her leadership and innovation in earth science education.

The winner will receive a $2,500 prize and an additional grant of $1,000 to enable the recipient to attend an AGI member society conference. To be eligible for this year’s competition, applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2008.

This award is named in honor of Dr. Edward C. Roy, Jr., who was a strong and dedicated supporter of earth science education. He served as Past President of AGI, chaired the AGI Education Advisory Committee, and received both the Ian Campbell Medal and the Heroy Distinguished Service award. In addition, he served as the Gertrude and Walter Pyron Distinguished Professor of Geology at Trinity University, as Dean of the Division of Sciences, Mathematics, and Engineering, and as Vice President for Academic Affairs. Roy was also appointed Chair of the Texas Earth Science Task Force by the Commissioner of the Texas Education Agency.

Call for Nominations

AGI is seeking quality candidates for American Geological Institute 2008 officer positions and awards. Your nominations should be received by February 1, 2008, in order to be reviewed by the AGI Nominating Committee making recommendations for the 2008 officers and awards. Specifically AGI is seeking nominations for the following Executive Committee positions and awards:

  • President Elect
  • AGI Secretary
  • AGI Member at Large

AGI Awards

  • Marcus Milling Legendary Geoscientist Medal
  • Medal in Memory of Ian Campbell
  • Outstanding Contribution to the Public Understanding of the Geosciences

AGI’s Nominating Committee recommendations will be presented for consideration to the AGI Member Society Council at the April 21, 2008, meeting in San Antonio, Texas.
