Geoscience Currents #11 explorees the academic background of individuals who hold terminal geoscience master’s or doctoral degrees. Both groups have comparable percentages of bachelor degrees in business, engineering, geosciences, other science & mathematics , and other degree fields. Additionally, 4% of terminal geoscience master’s degree recipients and 9% of geoscience Ph.D. recipients also have an associate’s degree. Interestingly, 14% of individuals with terminal geoscience master’s degree have a second master’s degree. The distribution of the second master’s degree is split across a variety of fields.

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008Longtime supporter and friend of AGI, Philip E. LaMoreaux, Sr. passed away at his home on June 23, 2008. Dr. LaMoreaux was involved with the Institute in many capacities. He served as AGI President (1972-1973) and was on the Board of Trustees of the AGI Foundation. LaMoreaux also co-chaired AGI’s Environmental Geoscience Advisory Committee.
Dr. LaMoreaux was active and well respected in the community. In addition to his involvement at AGI, he served as President of the Association of American State Geologists, and the American Institute of Hydrology. He also served as Chairman of the Geological Society of American Foundation Board of Trustees, GSA’s Hydrogeology Division, and American Geophysical Union’s Hydrology Division. LaMoreaux was Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Geology. Through his involvement with professional societies and his career as a federal, state, academic and consulting geologist he played a central role in helping both hydrogeology and environmental geology become some of the most dynamic and sought-after disciplines within geology.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Bunnie LaMoreaux; sons, Philip E. LaMoreaux, Jr. (Rebecca); James W. LaMoreaux (Nicole); daughter, Karen LaMoreaux Bryan (Hobson); nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Geoscience Currents #10: College Graduate Workers in the Mining, Petroleum, and Research Industries
Tuesday, June 17th, 2008Geoscience Currents #10 looks at several industries to examine the percentage of workers in those industries with their highest degree in the geosciences. Interestingly, nearly a quarter of college-educated workers in the mining industry have their highest degree in the geosciences. And even in the petroleum industry, with its very diverse operational base, still has 11% of its workers with their highest degree in the geosciences.
AGI Offers Outreach Assistant Position
Thursday, June 5th, 2008The American Geological Institute has an immediate opening for the position of Outreach Assistant. This full-time entry-level position reports to the Manager of Outreach. Duties include writing and editing, preparing electronic documents and updating Web pages, and various clerical functions associated with development of materials for Earth Science Week, a national public awareness campaign, as well as earth science curriculum products and professional development services.
