The Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University announces applications are being accepted for the recently approved Earth and Atmospheric Sciences Ph.D. program. This program is designed to develop a broad understanding of physical and chemical processes occurring in the Earth’s subsurface, its surface, and atmosphere. The program has a strong emphasis on observational studies and theoretical relationships as well as the use of a spectrum of quantitative and analytical tools to address problems related to the Earth and atmospheric sciences. Both Assistant Professor positions are split positions between the Department of Geosciences and the Geosystems Research Institute (GRI). Beyond their area of expertise candidates must be willing to collaborate with existing faculty in the fields of Geology, Meteorology, and Geospatial Sciences. The successful candidates will also be expected to participate in the mentoring of graduate students, teaching and course development, and scholarly research activities, including publishing peer-reviewed manuscripts and acquiring external funding. GRI has a comprehensive research and extension program focused on basic science, practical applications, and extension outreach in geospatial technologies. The successful Instructor candidates will utilize traditional and distance learning technologies to aid in the development of new distance learning (DL) meteorology and GIS courses and the teaching of new and existing DL meteorology and GIS courses. It is anticipated that these instructors will also teach traditional on-campus courses and may assist with summer field courses in their area of expertise. The Geosciences Distance Learning Programs offer B.S. and M.S. degrees in Geosciences. The Distance Learning Programs have enrollments of over 300 undergraduate and 250 graduate student majors.
