LAB 8: STREAM PROCESSES, LANDSCAPES, MASS WASTAGE, & FLOOD HAZARDS
GENERAL REFERENCE & INFORMATION
Water Resources of the United States is a U.S. Geological Survey site with
historical and realtime streamflow data, online reports, water-use data, and hotlinks
to other water-related sites
U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheets are listed by state and deal mainly with water-resource issues and projects.
National Water-Use Information is provided at this site by the U.S. Geological Survey's, National Water Use Information Program.
Remote Sensing Applications for Hydrology describes the kinds of satellite data that are used by hydrologists for estimates of rainfall, snowmelt, soil moisture, snow cover, ice cover, clouds, evapotranspiration, and more. It is provided by Environment Canada.
STREAM PROCESSES & LANDSCAPES
Geoindicators has summaries on the nature and significance of processes causing changes in stream channel morphology, stream flow, stream sediment storage and load, surface water quality, and wetlands.
Sand in the Grand Canyon provides information from U.S. Geological Studies on the source of the sand, sandbar formation, sand distribution on the channel bed, and trapping of sand behind Glen Canyon Dam.
MASS WASTAGE
Slope Failure (landslides) is a Geoindicators summary on the recognition/prediction of slope failure, human risk related to landslide hazards, the scale and measurement of slope failures, etc.
Rogers/Pacific, a geotechnical consulting business, provides articles on Landslide Mitigation Techniques and the Concept of Reasonable Care on Unstable Hillsides.
FLOOD HAZARDS
National Flood Insurance Program homepage has abundant information on the NFIP, flood insurance information for home buyers, coverage, how to file a flood insurance claim, flood hazard mapping, the community's role in floodplain management, and more.
The FEMA Map Service Center provides online access to NFIP flood map and insurance products such as Flood Insurance Rate Maps and Q3 Flood Data that are commonly used in floodplain management, hazards analysis, and risk assessment.
Background on Floods & Flash Floods is an online information "backgrounder" provided by the
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Floods & Flash Floods Survival Tips are provided on this FEMA site, including information on what to do before, during, and after encountering flood hazards.
EarthSat's FloodWatch describes EarthSat's programs of flood response, planning, and mitigation tools. Click on "FLOODCAST" for realtime forecasts of where/when floods may occur.
Greenpeace's Worsening Floods page provides brief news reports on flood
disasters from all parts of the world.
Dartmouth Flood Observatory conducts global flood monitoring and provides realtime flooding information, weekly and annual flood maps, and satellite images of floods.
Flood Investigations in Texas is a site that describes U.S. Geological Survey efforts to determine flood frequency in Texas based on data from stream gaging stations.
ReliefWeb is a United Nations Department of Humanitarian Affairs site for news and information about disaster preparedness, prevention, and response. Check the Current Global Emergencies List to find out where the world's worst flood disasters have occurred recently.
U.S. National Flood Summary is provided on this realtime FEMA Tropical Storm Watch site.
