LAB 9: GROUND WATER PROCESSES, RESOURCES, & RISKS

GENERAL REFERENCE & INFORMATION

Glossary of Water Resource Terms and Encyclopedia of Water Terms are both handy references for water-related terminology.

Water Resources of the United States is a U.S. Geological Survey site with historical and realtime streamflow data, online reports, water-use data, and hotlinks to other water-related sites

U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheets are listed by state and deal mainly with water-resource issues and projects.

National Water-Use Information is provided at this site by the U.S. Geological Survey's, National Water Use Information Program.

KARST & CAVES

Karst Activity is a Geoindicators summary that describes what karst is, how/where it occurs, its significance to humans, the scale and measurement of karst features, karst sensitivity to environmental change.

Edwards Limestone Aquifer Information Page has abundant information about the geology, hydrogeology, and water use statistics of this important Texas aquifer.

Virtual Cave has interesting information about caves and hotlinks to other cave-related sites.

Underwater Caves of El Jacinto Pat is a virtual tour of 35 miles of ancient cave passages in Mexico that formed above sea level. However, the cave passages are now submerged beneath the modern ocean.

SEPTIC SYSTEMS & GROUND WATER CONTAMINATION

Your Home Septic System has excellent information about this topic, provided by the State of Florida. Check out their additional site.

Behavior of Effluent Consitituents in Soil is another State of Florida site that describes the nature and behavior of many ground water contaminants.

On-Site Wastewater Disposal Systems is a State of Virginia site that discusses septic systems.

Water Knowledge Site is provided by Colorado State University and has answers to frequently-asked-questions about septic systems.

Septic system construction and maintenance are discussed at this site provided by the Building Permits Office, Clallam County, Washington.

Road Salt's Effects on Ground Water Quality is discussed here based on actual studies of this subject.

Wastewater Constituents in Soil has information on a wide range of constituents and their behavior in soil.

GROUND WATER LEVELS & LAND SUBSIDENCE

Groundwater Levels is a Geoindicators summary that briefly describes groundwater recharge and discharge, the scale and measurement of changes in ground water levels, and the significance of these factors relative to humans and environmental changes.

Groundwater Chemistry in the Unsaturated Zone is a Geoindicators summary that briefly describes how weathering processes in the unsaturated zone relate to climate changes.
