SATELLITES & REMOTE SENSING

GENERAL INFORMATION & RESOURCES

Introduction Lesson to Remote Sensing has a general introduction to remote sensing that includes information on image processing and its application in addressing global problems.

Satellite Remote Sensing & Its Role in Global Change Research is a CIESIN Thematic Guide that defines remote sensing, describes satellite technologies, and discusses the importance of satellite remote sensing for global change research.

The Use of Satellite Remote Sensing is a CIESIN Thematic Guide that describes how satellite remote sensing is used to study the human dimensions of global environmental change.

ETEC Remote Sensing Hotlist from NASA Classroom Of The Future has numerous hotlinks to over 100 sites on remote sensing and satellites

Other Remote Sensing Information can be found on this long list of hotlinks to sites dealing with satellites and remote sensing, provided by the WWW Virtual Library.

REALTIME SATELLITE IMAGES

Realtime Weather by Intellicast provides realtime weather-satellite images of international locations and describes what the images show.
FEMAs Tropical Storm and Hurricane Watch Information provides realtime information, images, storm tracking maps, key telephone numbers, situation reports, photographs, and news releases from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

SPECIFIC TOPICS

TOPEX/POSEIDON--The Ocean Topography Experiment describes this experiment in mapping ocean topography and sea-level changes via satellite, and provides images derived from the project. There are also links to other oceanographic sites.

Remote Sensing Applications for Hydrologydescribes the kinds of satellite data that are used by hydrologists for estimates of rainfall, snowmelt, soil moisture, snow cover, ice cover, clouds, evapotranspiration, and more. It is provided by Environment Canada.
