The Soil Science Society of America (SSSA) is a progressive international scientific society that fosters the transfer of knowledge and practices to sustain global soils. Based in Madison, WI, and founded in 1936, SSSA is the professional home for more than 6,000 members dedicated to advancing the field of soil science. SSSA supports its members by providing quality research-based publications, educational programs, certifications, and science policy initiatives. For more information, visit www.soils.org , and follow @SSSA_soils on Twitter and on Facebook: www.facebook.com/sssa.soils
SSSA has invested significantly in outreach activities to help raise awareness of the soil resource with a broader scientific audience:
“Dig It: The Secrets of Soil” - Smithsonian Exhibit
An estimated 2.5 million people have viewed the 5,000-square-foot exhibit that reveals the complex world of soil and how this ecosystem supports nearly every life form on earth. The exhibit opened at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, July 2008-January 2010, and then traveled to various museums, including its current stop at the Bell Museum of Natural History, Minneapolis, MN through July 28, 2013. For info, visit: www.bellmuseum.umn.edu.
Public Service Announcements
In response to growing concerns about the condition of some of the world’s soils, SSSA launched a “Story of Soil” campaign, produced as part of SSSA’s 75th Anniversary. Additional components are an “I Heart Soil” sticker and clothing. The Public Service Announcements (PSAs) are short, 30-second messages, and are available in both English and Spanish at www.iheartsoil.org. The topics of the three PSAs are:
- Human Health
- Food Quality
- Water
Science Policy Activities
The primary goals of the SSSA Science Policy Office are to educate and serve as a resource on agricultural, natural resources, and environmental issues, including: Congressional Soils Caucus, Position Statement/Reports, Educational Briefings, Coalitions, Congressional/District/State Hill Visits, and the Congressional Science Fellowship. www.soils.org/science-policy
Digital Library
The ACSESS Digital Library is a complete collection of all content published by SSSA and the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America. This includes research journals, magazines, books, Annual Meeting presentations, with Videos, Webcasts, Datasets, Data Models, and Modules (coming in 2013). www.dl.sciencesocieties.org
