AGI Publishes Career-Planning Reference Books

ALEXANDRIA, VA--Students in the United States and Canada count on the DIRECTORY OF GEOSCIENCE DEPARTMENTS and the GUIDE TO GEOSCIENCE DEPARTMENTS in the United States and Canada to help them make important choices about colleges and careers. The newest editions of the two directories were published by the American Geological Institute earlier this month.
The 34th edition (Fall 1995) of the DIRECTORY provides an alphabetical listing of approximately 1,000 geoscience departments in both two- and four-year colleges and universities throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Selected national laboratories, natural-history museums, and research departments and institutes are also listed. Names of more than 13,000 geoscientists in North America, with electronic mail, fax, and telephone numbers, and their fields of specialty are included. The 34th edition also lists field courses and camps, U.S. State Geological Surveys and selected foreign geoscience departments around the world. The DIRECTORY OF GEOSCIENCE DEPARTMENTS, 34th edition, Nicholas H. Claudy, editor. ISBN 0-922152-30-6. Soft cover; 6" x 9:; 546 pp., 2 lbs., $26.00 plus $5.00 postage and handling in the contiguous United States.
A valuable companion to the DIRECTORY is AGI's GUIDE TO GEOSCIENCE DEPARTMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA. Geoscience students and career counselors throughout North America have discovered that the GUIDE, now in its 3rd edition, allows users to pinpoint specific degree programs of interest. The reference source contains in-depth profiles of more than 200 academic departments. Information about admission procedures, enrollment numbers, degrees offered, course requirements for degrees, and financial aid are also included, enabling students to narrow their college search to specific programs.
Finding a job is the goal of most students and to address that need, the GUIDE provides important facts about current employment trends in seven major categories: petroleum industry, hydrology/environmental geology, federal government, state geological surveys, mining and the mineral industry, U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories, and academia. "It is a certainty that you will spend some part of your geoscience career in one of these major employment sectors," writes editor Nick Claudy. Salary ranges for various degree levels working in these fields are included. The GUIDE TO GEOSCIENCE DEPARTMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA, 3rd edition, Nicholas H. Claudy, editor. ISBN 0-922152-31-4. Soft cover, 8.5" x 11"; 583 pp., 3 lbs., $39.95 plus $6.00 postage and handling in the contiguous United States.
