ALEXANDRIA, VA.--Two exciting CD-ROM products recently released by
the American Geological Institute provide extensive and innovative
new resources for learning about planet Earth. The GLOSSARY OF
GEOLOGY, 3rd edition, one of the Institute's best-known books, is
available for the first time in CD-ROM format. AGI also introduces
PORTRAIT USA, a base map of the contiguous United States over which
topographic, geologic, and geophysical data can be superimposed.
Since its first publication in 1957, geoscience students and
professionals have considered the GLOSSARY OF GEOLOGY an essential
reference tool. Now, the entire contents of the 3rd edition,
containing more than 37,000 terms defined by experts, is available
at the click of a mouse. The CD-ROM technology provides a range of
options that make it easy to find terms and definitions quickly.

PORTRAIT USA brings forth, in an interactive and overlay
format, many of the most useful earth-science data sets available
today, providing users with new ways of relating multiple crustal
processes to resultant land forms. More than 150,000 natural and
geographic features and place names have been integrated into the
program, along with Thematic Mapper satellite images of major
physiographic provinces. Hundreds of megabytes of data from the
U.S. Geological Survey, National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, and National Aeronautics and Space Administration
were incorporated into the program.
Zoom, for example, into a state or region and view its
geology, topography, and earthquake occurrences (from 1534 to the
present)--then search for faults, interstate highways, rivers,
place names, and county and state boundaries. Databases also cover
isostatic gravity, MAGSAT magnetics, geothermal data, crustal
stress measurements, topography and bathymetry, and much more.
System requirements include: 386DX or higher processor, 4 MB
