AGI FACULTY SALARY REPT. 1995 Outlines Rise in Academic Wages
ALEXANDRIA, VA--From 1994 to 1995, mean salaries for geoscience
faculty increased for nearly all ranks at all pay rates, according
to the FACULTY SALARY REPORT, 1995, published by the American
Geological Institute in September. The greatest increase occurred
at the instructor level. The report is available at no charge from
the Institute.
Survey questionnaires were sent to the 847 U.S. geoscience
departments listed in AGI's DIRECTORY OF GEOSCIENCE DEPARTMENTS,
which included 675 departments at four-year colleges and
universities, and 172 departments at two-year colleges. There were
312 responses to this year's survey, which represents a 36.8
percent response rate. Of these, 264 responses came from four-year
colleges and universities (37.1 percent of those surveyed) and 48
from two-year colleges (27.9 percent of the total surveyed).
Salary data were provided for 2,556 full-time faculty members at
the ranks of professor, associate professor, assistant professor,
and instructor.
Respondents provided monthly salary figures in ranges of $249-
from $1,601 or less per month to $10,601 or more per month.
Respondents also indicated if their salaries were based on 9-/10-
month pay rates or 11-/12-month pay rates. Of the total
departments responding, 235 (75.3 percent) were at the 9-/10-month
pay rate and 77 (24.7 percent) were at the 11-/12-month pay rate.
