Comments: The Alaska Geologic Materials Center (GMC) consists of a rock collection that was derived from Federal, State, and private lands of Alaska, including the Alaska outer continental shelf. The collection includes rock materials from over 1,130 oil and gas exploratory and/or production wells, rock core from over 774 exploratory hard-rock mineral holes, and surface samples. The collection also includes extensive geochemical data, petrographic thin sections, and paleontological glass slides derived from this rock.

The GMC is operated by the State of Alaska, Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological and Geophysical Surveys. The GMC cooperating government agencies are the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, USGS, U.S. Minerals Management Service, and Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. The basic concept of the GMC is to be an archive facility for all worthwhile rock samples collected in the State of Alaska and collected on the Alaska outer continental shelf. The biggest user of the GMC is industry. The GMC has a monthly report that is mailed to anyone free upon request.
