Technical Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Where will the data repository system be located?

The NGDRS consists of an integrated network rather than a single, centralized facility, built upon existing data centers, both public and private, located throughout the United States. Shell Oil Company, for example, deeded its core repository in Midland, Texas to the Bureau of Economic Geology at the University of Texas-Austin. The Midland collection is part of the national repository network. Metadata for electronic databases (supercatalog) are stored at a central facility in Houston at offices of The Information Store, Inc.

What is the Metadata Repository?

The NGDRS Metadata Repository is a central data processing facility consisting of the information technology components (hardware, software, network), the geosciences databases, GeoTrek software and services required to enable indexing and browsing of the NGDRS participating repository holdings.

What Repositories are part of the NGDRS at this time?

Several repositories are currently part of the NGDRS.  Please see Data Sets to see the current status of various data repositories and their holdings.

Can I copy data from the NGDRS supercatalog?

Yes. All data posted in the NGDRS system can be copied by users as needed. The NGDRS administrative team is responsible for ensuring the proper clearances from the owners or custodians of the data has been acquired. The GeoTrek software provides an Microsoft Excel export feature that allows user to download data into their PCs.

Can I download the GeoTrek software for internal use in my organization?

No. The GeoTrek software is copyrighted by the American Geological Institute (AGI).  However, if your organization is a non-profit entity you may want to contact AGI about licensing the GeoTrek software.
