PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

The Denver Show will be a bit busier than usual this year with the 6th International Conference on Mineralogy and Museums (M&M6) fronting the show. It should be an exciting opportunity to meet and confer with our colleagues from around the world. The program is packed with a diverse array of presentations and posters that curators will find useful in their own facilities and research. This is the first time the meeting has been hosted in the United States, so even if you are not participating in the program, you have a unique opportunity to participate in an international meeting devoted to museums. SMMP is hosting the poster session reception on Monday night of the meeting. Be sure to stop by and enjoy some refreshments, finger foods, and collegiality. The fabulous Denver Show follows on the heels of the M&M6 meeting. The overlap allows us to catch the very beginnings of the retail show, something I usually cannot attend because of financial restrictions.

I'd like to call your attention to a couple of things prior to your departure to Denver. First, be sure to participate in our display this year. The topic is Odd, rare, and unusual specimens from Colorado, please look through your collections for something to contribute. Our displays always receive excellent reviews and Jean DeMouthe (and occasional surrogates) puts significant effort into the display. Don't make her job more difficult by making her prompt the membership to contribute. Secondly, please review the minutes from the Tucson Meeting prior to the Denver Show. We had a miscommunication and the minutes as posted were reconstituted from notes and memory. If you have any corrections/suggestions, send them on to me. Last, we sure could use a volunteer to address a new (number 3 in the series) Best Practices contribution. Let's keep the ball rolling ladies and gentlemen. By the way, we had no applications for the SMMP Research Study Grants this year. Maybe next year...

Looking forward to seeing you all in Denver.

Virgil W. Lueth, President

SMMP LIST SERVER

You are encouraged to interact with your fellow SMMP members via our list server:

smmp@listserv.nhm.org

Please remember that when you reply to an email sent via our list server, you will be replying to the sender, although you have the option of copying the membership.

Tony Kampf processes additions to and deletions from the list server. That way we can limit the list to our membership and if a member decides that they want to be dropped from the list, Tony will know whether to send them the SMMP Newsletter by snail mail. Note that you are only be able to send via the list server by using your email address that is on the list server. This should be the same one that is used in our on-line roster.

6th International Conference on Mineralogy and Museums

Over the last 19 years, Mineralogy & Museums meetings have provided the opportunity for persons with interests in mineral collections, particularly museum staff members, to stay abreast of the latest developments in the areas of communications, exhibitions, computerization of collections, history of collections, and other pertinent topics.  The M&M6 Conference will address the areas of growth since the last conference, as well as new developments in mineral museums. The first conference took place in London in 1988, followed by Toronto in 1992, Budapest in 1996, Melbourne in 2000, and Paris in 2004.

SMMP is sponsoring the poster session reception at the meeting Monday evening, September 8 from 5 to 7 p.m.
