Biography

Dallas L. Peck
U.S. Geological Survey
Reston, Virginia

Dr. Peck received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from the California Institute of Technology and Ph.D. degree in geology from Harvard University. His entire professional employment has been with the U.S. Geological Survey, first as a geolo gic field assistant, then as a geologist, Assistant Chief Geologist for Geochemistry and Geophysics, Chief Geologist of USGS, and Director of USGS. He returned to the Geologic Division of USGS in 1993 to conduct research on the granites of the Sierra Neva da and to serve as adviser in the Office of the Chief Geologist. In 1995 he retired from the USGS, but he continues as an emeritus scientist in order to complete his research project. Dr. Peck has been an adviser to the National Science Foundation, the Na tional Research Council, Sandia Laboratories, Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories, as well as to many universities. He has been a delegate to numerous international associations and commissions, and was co-host for the 29th International Geological Congres s. He served as Chairman of the Committee on Earth and Environmental Sciences of the Federal Coordinating Council for Science, Engineering, and Technology. He is a distinguished member of many professional associations and societies, including the America n Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Geophysical Union, the Geological Society of America, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, and the Society of Economic Geologists.
