Jonathan G. Price

Dr. Price is the Director and State Geologist of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology. In 1972 he earned his B.A. in geology and German from Lehigh University. He then studied mineralogy, petrology, and economic geology at the University of Heidelberg for one year. In 1977 he earned his Ph.D. in geology from the University of California, Berkeley.
Dr. Price worked in copper, iron, gold, and uranium exploration and mining, primarily in Nevada and Texas, before joining the staff of the Bureau of Economic Geology, which is the Texas state geological survey and a research unit of the University of Texas at Austin. He became Nevada State Geologist in 1988. During 1993 and 1994 he was on loan from the University of Nevada to the National Research Council as the Staff Director of the Board on Earth Sciences and Resources, which advises the federal government and the geological profession on issues related to mineral and energy resources and the geological sciences in general.
Dr. Price is the author of over 100 publications, primarily in economic geology, geochemistry, igneous petrology, geologic hazards, and environmental geology. His work, including geologic mapping, has generally been in collaboration with other geologists and occasionally engineers. He has served as a volunteer officer or committee member for the Association of American State Geologists; Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration; American Geological Institute; Society of Economic Geologists; American Geophysical Union; Geological Society of America; Geological Society of Nevada; and the American Red Cross. He is the 1997 President of the American Institute of Professional Geologists.
