Dr. Richard W. Spinrad

Dr. Spinrad is a graduate of the Johns Hopkins University and performed his graduate studies at Oregon State University, where he received an M.S. in physical oceanography and a Ph.D. in marine geology. He has worked as a research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, and was the President of Sea Tech, Inc., a major manufacturer of oceanographic sensors. Dr. Spinrad served as the Navy's manager of optical oceanographic research at the Office of Naval Research. He then served as Division Head for the Ocean Biology/Optics/Chemistry Division, and following the re-organization of ONR in 1993, as Division Director for the $150M Ocean, Atmosphere and Space Modeling and Prediction Division. Dr. Spinrad has published approximately 50 articles and is the editor of one textbook and several special issues of marine oriented journals. He serves as Associate Editor of Oceanography magazine and is an elected member of the Council of The Oceanography Society. Dr. Spinrad also serves on the faculty of the U.S. Naval Academy and George Mason University. At CORE, which Dr. Spinrad joined in December of 1994, he has co-authored the Oceans 2000 report with ADM James D. Watkins. This report is serving as a pivotal statement of direction for the oceanographic community.
