Vicki Cowart

Ms. Cowart was appointed to the position of State Geologist and Director of the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) on June 1, 1993. She manages the agency's budget of almost $3 million and staff of 37. She received her B.S. degree in physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, of Worcester, Massachusetts, and her M.S. degree in geophysics from the Colorado School of Mines.
Before she joined the CGS, Ms. Cowart worked in the oil and gas industry for 16 years. She has explored for oil and gas throughout the Rocky Mountain region, as well as offshore California and the Gulf Coast. She began her career with Mobil Oil, joined management at ARCO Oil & Gas, and did both technical sales and operations management with Schlumberger Well Services.
Her professional activity includes serving on the Colorado School of Mines Visiting Committee to the Geophysics Department. She served as a Director and Officer on the CSM Alumni Association from 1987 until 1991 and received the CSMAA Young Alumnus Award in 1988.
In addition, Ms. Cowart has been active in the Denver Geophysical Society, serving as both editor and treasurer, and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, in which she has served on or chaired several committees. She founded the Denver chapter of the Association for Women Geoscientists and served as that Association's first nationally elected president. She was treasurer of the AWG Foundation for four years and is currently an Advisor to the Foundation's Board of Directors.
As a state geologist, she is active within the Association of American State Geologists. She serves as the Central States representative to the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program Peer Review Panel and as the association's statistician.
Ms. Cowart is married to a geologist who became a mining lawyer. They enjoy skiing, hiking, canoeing and fishing throughout Colorado.
