The Pulse of Earth Science: An Advocacy Guide

Making a Difference

Up to now, who has decided what’s taught in Earth science classrooms in your schools? They’re people just like you — parents, teachers, administrators, employers, local officials, state policymakers, and others who cared enough to speak up.

Who will determine the place of Earth science in education tomorrow? You can make a difference, simply by following the recommendations offered here. Talk to a neighbor. Volunteer in a classroom. Email a district official or a state school board member. You just might find the process energizing. By exercising your right to influence education policy decisions, you’re taking advantage of an opportunity to help teach young people about the wonders of Earth science today. And you’re preparing them, maybe more importantly, for many of the challenges they’ll face in a future that is sure to be shaped by the geosciences.
